Kenya will be participating in the International Self-reported Delinquency (ISRD4) research through Moi University. Kenya is a developing East African country with a coastline on the Indian Ocean. A 2019 census shows that Kenya has a population of 53,667,080.  61% of the total population are aged 0-24 years. About 3.4 million of the population are secondary school students that are targeted by this research. The research will be conducted in Nairobi and Mombasa which are the two largest cities in Kenya. The cities offer wide socialeconomic and cultural variations that contribute to dynamic human interactions and lifestyles.

Nairobi City

It is the largest and capital city in Kenya. The city is popularly referred to as the Green City in the Sun. It was founded in 1899 and have grown steadily with a constantly changing skyline. Nairobi is home to 4.397 million people and another 9.354 million in its metropolis. Majority of the city’s population are either in temporary employment or jua kali sector and live below a dollar per day while 39% of youth are unemployed. This has led to growth of informal settlements and large slum dwellings in the city. Nairobi is adjacent to the expansive Nairobi National Park where one can see black rhinos, lions, giraffes, zebras, leopards among others. The city is a jumping-off point for safari trips elsewhere in Kenya’s scenic places and large game reserves.

Mombasa City

It is the second largest city in Kenya located along the Indian Ocean. It is the oldest city in Kenya dating back to 900 AD. The strategic location of the city made it a historical trading centre controlled by different nations prior to Kenya’s independence in 1963. The city is comprised of mainland and an island that is connected to the North Coast by a bridge and to the South Coast by ferry services. It is popularly known as the white and blue city due to its white beaches and the blue Indian Ocean that have influenced painting of buildings white and blue. It is home to 1.208 million people in the central business district and another 3.528 million in its metropolis. Clean beaches, warm climate and the Swahili culture make Mombasa an important tourism-based city. In addition, the city hosts the largest port in East Africa, several industries that employ the relatively large population.
